ALBUM: Brother & Bones ‘Brother & Bones’

Rating:

Brother & Bones is the debut self-titled album from the Cornwall based five-piece. The band have recently supported the likes of Ben Howard and Bastille on tour, alongside performing several headline shows. Recorded at East West Studios in Los Angeles, California, their eponymous first record is crammed with powerful acoustic-led, alternative rock tracks.

Opener ‘Kerosene’ boasts tribal drum beats, energetic guitar, and vocals which will instantly ignite the listener’s attention – they’ve been compared to likes of Pearl Jam and John Martyn. The intensity of ‘Omaha’ will please the band’s pre-existing fan base and catch the attention of new listener’s who are seeking something heavier.

‘Raining Stone’ which is accompanied by a new live video, is the perfect blend of light and dark, loud and quiet, heart and soul. Directed by Luke Pilbeam, the footage was taken from the band’s recent St. Ives show in Cornwall, and shows just how passionately both band and crowd perform when Brother & Bones’ sound pours down like thrashing, philanthropic rain.

‘For All We Know’ is a gentler addition to the record, but easily matches the power of the heavier tracks in the final minute with its cathartic burst of drums and backing vocals. ‘Everything To Lose’ follows in this tradition, but with more frequent changes in pace and volume; and ‘Dusk’ is the silver lining in this collection.

‘Crawling’ is a beast of a song which rolls out gloriously over more stand-out vocals and cavernous drums. ‘If I Belong’ is the eleventh and final track on the album, and is a poignant song about place, time, and the need to be accepted – something all listener’s will be able to appreciate.

Brother & Bones debut album is a collection of bold, beautiful tracks that ring out with ambition and primal desire. They belong on the stage and in your record collection.

Brother & Bones’ self-titled album is released on 04.09.15.
