Perfect Tense is the third album from Danish singer-songwriter, dancer & producer, Fallulah. Recorded in London with producer Liam Howe (FKA Twigs, Lana Del Rey), this is her first release outside of Scandinavia; and, with the help of music legend Richard Gottehrer’s New York label ‘Instant Records’, Fallulah’s sound is spreading to a wider audience.
The singer lives in the Perfect Tense, creating music filled with poppy, personal positivity. The encouraging electronics and celebratory lyrics on the eponymous opening track gently remind listeners to dream in colour, and not let mistakes prevent them from trying to “make perfect sense”.
‘I.L.W.A.D.’ is a slower, smoother track and stands for ‘In Love With A Dream’. Love-lorn and vulnerable, Fallulah goes with her heart – “People say I shouldn’t risk it…” – and the result is this recurring aural dream. ‘Social Club’ is funky and full of “Bubblegum smack”, whilst ‘Sorrow Is A Shadow’ is surprisingly upbeat; keyboard and electric drums are used to dazzling effect on the track’s chorus. ‘Ghostfriend’ is edgier in sound, urging listeners to come closer “if you dare to…”, and ‘Vandalain’ is stripped back, relying on Fallulah’s lovely vocals and electric guitar.
‘Bob Dylan’ feels like an indie-pop attack on music hypocrites and capitalists – “Bob Dylan is for sale, the whole word is for sale, but we don’t have any money, so we’ll just go to hell…” – whilst ‘Slow Love’ is a steady meditation on romance. The ‘Swimming Pool’ is a sweet splash of ambient electronic pop, and on ‘Lost’ it sounds like Fallulah is revelling in her unplanned journey, alongside stomping percussion and memorable guitar riffs. She closes the record with ‘We All Need Water’, proving that her third album is a fresh, hydrating listen.
Those with a keen ear for electronic or indie pop rhythms will undoubtedly approve of Fallulah’s latest offering.
Perfect Tense is out now on Instant Records.
