Album Review: Kristyna Myles – Pinch Me Quick

On hearing Kristyna Myles ‘ album contained a cover version of The Style Council’s ‘The Paris Match’, I was instantly intrigued as I am a big fan of Paul Weller’s post Jam group. Indeed, with this version being endorsed by Paul Weller and described by the Modfather himself as “absolutely stunning”, people are going to sit-up and take notice. Produced by former Style Council drummer Steve White & Andy Ross, the version itself is majestic and worthy of the praise received. However, ‘The Paris Match’ is one of many nuggets on this album and after a few listens I was hooked!

Released by Take Note Recordings, the album is full of highlights showcasing both Kristyna’s talented song writing and beautiful voice. ‘Someone’ opens the album perfectly and sets the tone for the songs that follow. Despite the underlying lyrics, ‘You’ve Changed’ has an upbeat feel to it and within a couple of listens I found myself singing along to this one. There appears to be a theme of ‘someone who has wronged in love’ at times and in ‘Move On’ Kristyna appears to be releasing her angst in a positive manner. The album title ‘Pinch Me Quick’ is taken from ‘Wouldn’t Change A Thing’ – another song that pleases the ears.

The album is peppered with a number of talented musicians such as Trio Valore’s Damon, Justin and Steve and Ben Gordelier (The Moons/Paul Weller), as well as Kristyna’s touring guitarist Ben Williams who is credited with co-writing a few tracks. For me, ‘Uninvited’ is one of the standouts of both this writing relationship and also the album itself.

Surprisingly, ‘The Paris Match’ is not my favourite song on Pinch Me Quick, with the excellent ‘Three Little Words’ stealing that accolade, with the accompanying video being equally as mesmerizing! The album closes with the powerful ‘I’m Not Going Back’ and – after listening to the album a few times – is clear the only place Kristyna is headed is forwards. With her dedicated band of Twitter followers, known as @teammyles, it is clear I am not the only one thinking this! With her soulful voice and a jazzy feel to many of the songs, this is a great album to chill to in what will hopefully be another ‘Long Hot Summer’!
