Birdeatsbaby release new single – ‘The Bullet’

About to release their third album, ‘The Bullet Within’, Brighton-based Birdeatsbaby release rousing new single ‘The Bullet’. With an intro that Queen would be proud of – powerful guitars and clashing cymbals, which is suddenly turned on its head after five seconds for a more relaxed, almost nursery-rhyme like melody. The first ten seconds of this song are not what you expect and let you know that this won’t be an easy ride. You’re not listening to another generic indie-rock band, you’re listening to a band that aren’t afraid to play with genre and style to create a totally unique sound.

Attempts at labelling Birdeatsbaby as something specific have resulted in phrases like ‘cabaret rock’ or ‘indie noir’. Personally, I don’t think it’s possible to pigeon-hole such a progressive and ambitious band. ‘The Bullet’ does display some ‘cabaret’ or musical theatre like influences; consistent changes of time signature, string-heavy instrumentation or the theatrical singing style of band leader and lyricist Mishkin Fitzgerald. Her powerful and passionate voice embellishes her frank and honest lyrics perfectly –  “took centre stage for the world just to spit you out”. And, with influences from Muse to Chopin, it’s no surprise that Fitzgerald’s music has developed so intriguingly.

Having already received acclaim from many respectable names in the industry, such as BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, Ben Graham from The Quietus and Independent music critic Simon Price, Birdeatsbaby certainly haven’t let their fans down with ‘The Bullet’: three and a half minutes of twists and turns, ups and downs of incomparable and fascinating music. And, if this reflects what’s to come from their new album – ‘The Bullet Within’ – then you should be desperate to get your hands on it.

New single, ‘The Bullet’, is out now.
