With a musical career spanning almost two decades, you’d think Carl Barat might have run out of ideas. But the friend of online music TV show Red Stripe Presents: This Feeling TV has a load more up his sleeve and joined presenters Radio X DJ Gordon Smart and TV presenter Laura Whitmore alongside his sister Lucie Barat, who is a screen writer and lead singer of The Au Revoirs. The pair reveal details of growing up together and lift the lid on Carl’s early bands, while Carl also shares an update on the new Libertines album and solo material.

Jumping straight into the wait for the new Libertines album, Gordon says he has to twist Carl’s arm every time he sees him for an update and fortunately for fans of the band, there shouldn’t be much longer to wait.

Carl says: “You can’t hurry it up but yeah, it’s [the album is] coming. We’ve being doing some really interesting stuff, working with Liam [Howlett] from The Prodigy, which on some tracks are out of the zone of the stuff we’ve done before. I think we’re taking a different approach where we just go in and everyone just does what they’re feeling in whatever style. We don’t limit ourselves.”

Interestingly, Carl informs Laura and Gordon that he is actually writing a record himself that includes people he has loved for years. Carl says: “I’m writing a record. I’m actually doing some sessions with people who have inspired me over the years. I’ve never really written with people I know and respect but I’ve been working with a few heroes. I’ve just been going around bothering people who I really admire. But yeah, that’s really inspiring for me. So the solo record is definitely very different and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Laura nudges Carl for a release date but Carl just says: “It will be after The Libertines. Or maybe before! We’ll see.”

Talking about getting match fit for the upcoming ‘Libs’ tour, Gordon asks Carl how he has been preparing to hit the road. Carl explains: “I’ve had a month to get ready for this tour and I’ve wanted to give some time to the kids, too.”

Moving back in time from new material to the Barat childhood, Gordon asks Lucie for a bit of gossip on what it was like growing up in the musical household and whether or not she foresaw Carl’s future success. Lucie says: “You had that band at school. I just remember there being arguments about who was going to be the singer.”

Carl elaborates hesitantly and says: “We don’t need to talk about them. We were called ‘Flange Gasket and the Grease Nipples’ for a short time. It’s because we used to rehearse in a little garage and all the labels on the draws were ‘flange gaskets’, ‘grease nipples’. It’s not very cool, is it?”
