Discovery of the Week: Beach Baby

Latitude Festival this weekend was 4 days of lovely weather, lush tunes, and learning the importance of sun cream. However, the best thing I discovered over the weekend was lots of awesome new music, with The Lake Stage and The Alcove becoming buzzing hubs of exciting underground music.

The Lake Stage was personally curated by Huw Stephens, so of course all the bands were on their best form. Drenge were not on their best form over on the 6Music Stage, so I took a stroll and happened upon Beach Baby. There’s a decent crowd and some super smooth bass lines, so I decide to stick around. Best decision of the weekend.

Beach Baby are four guys from London with some fresh ideas and slick guitar skills. ‘No Mind No Money’ is full of slacker surf vibes, bass lines Metronomy would be proud of and some of the most incredibly beautiful “oooo”s I’ve heard in my entire life.

Both guitarists share vocal duties, their rich tones and sweet harmonies enhancing every other element of their music, including the simple but succinct lyrics in ‘Ladybird’ – “I don’t wanna live for nothing, I don’t wanna live”. There’s a natural click of chemistry between these guys, reverb shimmers across the crowd and the sun glimmers above the fields – a beautiful moment to solidify my favourite new band from the festival.

Beach Baby are playing more UK dates throughout the year, find them on Facebook.
