Discovery of the Week: Cavalry

It’s pretty tough to find some really good alt-folk at the moment. Mumford & Sons are releasing crappier music by the day, and the only other demonstrations are from up and coming duos like Hudson Taylor or the increasingly average James Bay.

However, Liverpool has provided some much welcomed relief from the average in the form of 5-piece, Cavalry. Their masterful approach to song-writing and arrangement is totally fresh and invigorating. The Scouse boys released two tracks last year, ‘Lament’ and ‘Leaves’,  that perfectly complement each other – calm and quaint one minute, then swiftly full of momentum in the layers of expertly crafted sounds.

Since then, Cavalry have been a bit quiet but understandably, (pun intended) as they’re about to release brand new track, ‘An Understanding’. A striking chord followed by gentle guitar strums builds momentum up to Alan Croft’s incredibly full and heavenly tone – “I will collide, with your eyes last of all”. A steady, banging kick drum serves as the perfect base to such a fervent, exciting and exhilarating chorus. Superb chord progressions and musicality add that extra sparkle to a son, and are the best thing about Cavalry. Each listen presents a different part of the music that shimmers brighter than before.

‘An Understanding’ is accompanied by a stunning video, complete with the shimmering metaphorical bursts of light I previously referenced. Dark, light and shadows are all used to full effect and really portray and empower the true emotion of the song to make for a wonderful piece of music and motion. With these great tracks under their belt and support from Radio 2 DJs and Huw Stephens, I can’t wait to see what Cavalry have for us next.
