Speedy Wunderground are one of the coolest new labels out there right now, producing sweet new tracks from awesome bands and artists in just one day: the recording must be finished before midnight, and there’s no lunch breaks! The mixing is then done the next day, in one day, “to avoid over-cooking” and “faff”.
All this can be found on Speedy Wunderground’s 10-point plan for making records on their Facebook page. These rules are currently working wonders for musical content creation, with the label already releasing tracks from Teleman, Kate Tempest, TOY, JUCE and more. And, a few days ago, Speedy Wunderground announced their new would-be release from American/Swedish fuzz-rockers FEWS.
I coincidentally saw FEWS earlier this year supporting Ghostpoet at his one off 100-capacity Manchester show (feel free to read my review here), and totally loved their sound. I’m disappointed to come back and find a few of their old tracks removed from Soundcloud – the only remaining being ‘THE ZOO’, which could literally have been plucked straight from DIIV’s debut album. However, don’t mistake this for a criticism – it can only be a compliment; what a cracking album.
FEWS have made up for their lack of songs and scary similarity to DIIV with new track ‘ILL’, an 8-minute blinder of post-punk energy; distorted bass lines and raging drums ebb and flow, as we’re treated to a mix of so many sounds it’d be near impossible to identify them. Guttering guitars shake and convulse to an ultimate ending of crazy echoing fuzz that declines and dims into eventual silence. The track still has subtle DIIV elements, but so much more has gone into this – you can certainly hear the band’s progression.‘ILL’ really is an epic piece of work, considering it was all done in one go.
FEWS have shown their potential off to the world and now, with this additional Wunderground promotion, hopefully they’ll be going far.
