Discovery Of The Week: Leland Sundries

Leland Sundries aren’t the standard band you hear coming out of New York City. The NY garage rock we all know and love is enhanced in their sound, with the best elements of Americana, indie and hints of folk. Nick Loss-Eaton and his band of merry men take you on a journey of subtle twists and turns in the road that is brand new track ‘Studebaker’.

Named after a 19th century automobile, Loss-Eaton sings of his car transit in his soft and welcoming tone – “reflections of traffic lights off the puddles late at night”. The track begins with a comforting snare drum, combined with loose and subdued guitars, and the Americana vibes are more prevalent in ‘Studebaker’ than Leland Sundries’ previous single ‘Radiator Sabotage’.

‘Studebaker’, whilst being easily palatable, is music for fans of the diverse and somewhat peculiar. Its sudden but superb switches between sweet folk and fellow New Yorkers Parquet Courts-style fuzz vocals is enjoyable and admirable. Their new album, Music For Outcasts, revolves around two key events in Loss-Eaton’s life in the past few years: after a struggle to recover from alcohol dependency, Loss-Eaton then went on to face and survive emergency open heart surgery.

An interesting vision into the sense of a young man’s mortality and zest for life is here for all to hear – and I’d highly recommend it.

Already tipped for greatness by The New York Times and iTunes, Leland Sundries debut album Music For Outcasts is released 5 February via L’Echiquier Records.
