Discovery of the Week: Safe To Swim

I like people who like to have fun, and I like bands who like to have fun. Music that is fun is often the most enjoyable – it creates the memories that last the longest. Safe To Swim’s new video does just that; ‘Joyride’ shows off their inner party (and a lil crazy). These four boys from Brighton make the most British-sounding, yet American-influenced, indie pop around right now. It’s indie, but it’s heavy, fuzzy and fresh. Dan’s vocals are clear and unedited, mirrored by sweet guitar or occasional glockenspiel, sitting on top of a wall of heavy fuzz. The contrast is exhilarating.

The video for ‘Joyride’ takes the viewer on a journey of DIY psychedelia to the max. The use of green screen is totally progressive, and trippy, and the boys play in their front room without a care in the world, as their small inflatable banana reads “WE’RE ON TINDER”. That’s a great marketing plan if ever I’ve heard one. By the end, they’re sprawled all over the floor, balloons and guitars flying left, right and centre. It’s impossible to watch without having as much fun as Safe To Swim did making it.

‘Joyride’ is out now.
