Discovery of the Week: Skies

Atmospheric piano chords topped with space-age synths that could have been ironically nabbed from Owl City’s ‘Fireflies’ are the first sounds to embrace your ears when listening to Skies’ new single, ‘Drone’. The gloomy mood is certainly set by the minor shifts in the synth melody, and is confirmed by Allie Cotter’s first lyric “I’m gonna hate myself in the morning in the cold light of day”. Her voice has a soft but unique tone to it – it’s subtle but easily recognisable, seducing you further to hear more.

Skies are a duo based in Folkestone, Kent. Allie Cotter and Jericho Tozer together create modern electronic pop that should be the staple, the blueprint for all other hopefuls. ‘Drone’ has thrilling vocals that heighten the sense of dramatic performance in the song, allowing the listener to truly feel the music and understand the emotions portrayed. Acute and electrifying instrumentation, along with some brilliant tunes rounds off ‘Drone’ as a smashing release and hopefully a sign for more wonders of electro-pop to come.

‘Drone’ is released on January 29 via LAB Records.
