Discovery Of The Week: SPORTS

It’s the American DIY indie labels that are blowing my mind recently. There’s some key labels putting out consistently awesome bands and records, and I’m overloaded with sweet-ass tunes. I recently came across Father/Daughter Records, through their previous releases of Diet Cig and their most recent Faux Real compilation, which included cover songs from Quarterbacks, LVL UP and Krill. And now, the San Francisco/Miami based indie have just released ‘Get Bummed Out’, the fourth single from SPORTS’ debut album.

SPORTS are four besties from Ohio: “friends first, band second” to quote their Facebook page, which is a lovely sentiment. ‘Get Bummed Out’ is certainly the best of the four tracks already released from upcoming record All Of Something. And that’s a tall order, when songs like ‘Saturday’, ‘Reality TV’ and ‘The Washing Machine’ exist.

‘Get Bummed Out’ oozes restrained guitars beneath Carmen Perry’s sweet and melancholic vocal, as she sings of unfulfilled love – “I won’t talk to you, ‘cause it’ll hurt too badly when you let me down”. What initially seems like timid ‘pop-punk’ soon develops into something much more as crushing reality is thrown upon you by Perry’s lyrical prowess.

All Of Something is released 30 October via Father/Daughter Records.
