Discovery Of The Week: The Van T’s

When your music’s described as the ‘musical equivalent of a John Hughes movie’ (CLASH), you know you’re doing something right. It’s a well deserved allusion for twin sisters Hannah & Chole Van Thompson, who began playing as The Van T’s in their late teens, and later joined forces with Joanne Forbes and Shaun Hood to complete their surf-rock inspired ensemble.

They’ve released two EPs so far: 2015’s Laguna Babe and 2016 follow-up, A Coming Of Age, which features the superb single ‘Blood Orange’. It’s an alternative 90s-infused grungy dream, inspired by a love of bands like the B52’s, Veruca Salt, Smashing Pumpkins and Le Butcherettes.

The band have come a long way since their early shows, which consisted of the Van Thompson sisters playing as a duo around Scotland. As a four-piece, they’ve appeared at T in the Park, Wickerman, and Electric Fields, as well as recently supporting the ever-cool Honeyblood and Gigslutz favourites HAWK, and are set to be opening for the almighty Yuck on their London tour dates.

With a “sunny 50s jukebox style…and a twist of cathartic 90s grunge”, it’s difficult to turn your ears away from The Van T’s effortless, authentic grunge sound.

A Coming Of Age, the fantastic new EP from The Van T’s, is out now via Bloc+Music and is available from iTunes.  Catch The Van T’s on one of their upcoming summer dates:

16 July – King Tut’s Summer Nights, Glasgow
25 August – The List Art Festival, Edinburgh
26 August – Electric Fields Festival
10 September – Edinburgh University Freshers Night
