EP: Diet Cig ‘Over Easy’

Rating:

Releasing their debut EP on Father/Daughter Records this week, Diet Cig are about to steal your heart.

Hailing from New Paltz, New York, Diet Cig craft their sound with a faultless simplicity and an infectious optimism. Clocking in at ten minutes in total, Over Easy is the very definition of short-and-sweet. Overflowing with youthful vigour and angst-driven honesty, the EP carries itself with such a defiant voice that you can’t help but fall under its spell.

Opening track ‘Breathless’ is a delightful ode to the independent and improvised nature of having your own place for the first time. “I don’t have any kitchenware,” Alex Luciano sings, “but I can walk around in my underwear.” Pool Boyz is an odes to enjoyably wasted afternoons with the small town blues “I’m sorry my town sucks, we all know life’s rough,” Luciano laments, before breaking into a raucous chorus.

Lead track ‘Scene Sick’ is perhaps the most enchanting sentiment of disinterest you’ll ever hear. “I’d rather talk about something more exciting” Alex Luciano states, before breaking into the rousing and ever-so-quotable refrain “fuck all your romance, I just wanna dance.” The music video (below) serves as the perfect accompaniment, encapsulating the duo’s raw energy and freewheeling spirit to a T. Closing track ‘Harvard’ is the EP’s highlight: an addictive anthem against those who jilted us. “I hope you got something out of that deal, or made your parents proud” Luciano blares, adding the round of applause worthy, “I bet she’s not as loud.”

Throughout the EP, compelling lyrics are coupled with driving drumbeats and catchy guitars. It’s nothing over-complicated, and that’s exactly what gives the band their charm. They’re doing what they want, making the music they want to, and having a hell of a ball doing it – and we’ll be damned if we aren’t having a hell of a ball hearing it too.

Over Easy is out now via Father/Daughter Records.
