EP: Liu Bei ‘Goodness’

Rating:

Instantly captivating and intensely satisfying are two phrases best used to describe the harmoniously melodic sounds of five-piece Liu Bei, and their brand-new EP, Goodness. Favouring dreamy vibes and sparkling guitar riffs; Liu Bei (pronounced Lou Bay) and their latest offering ooze optimism while heavily carving their name into 2015.

Title-track ‘Goodness’ opens the EP with a burst of glorious sunshine; a sound representation of a hazy summer morning. Marrying gentle vocals with rose-tinted riffs drenched in passion makes ‘Goodness’ the ultimate ode to love, and a serious contender for Liu Bei’s greatest moment on the collection.

Unexpectedly, Liu Bei’s ‘Fields’ features a dazzling vocal duet from Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell. Although doused with the same concentration of emotion as ‘Goodness’, ‘Fields’ substitutes radiating happiness for forceful desire, brought about through the somewhat-eerie vocal duet. Heaving, heavy hearts can be heard pulsing through ‘Fields’, making a direct oxymoron between the former track. The diversity is outstanding and something which Liu Bei should greatly be applauded for.

The Goodness EP’s closing track, ‘Knotweed’, sees San Felu Basement transforming the band’s song into a feel-good, lethargic summer anthem. Progressive beats subtly compliment the vocal-driven ‘Knotweed’, keeping the listener ravenous for more before gently fading into oblivion.

It’s time to pick your jaw from the ground and comprehend the beauty of Liu Bei’s brilliant new EP.

Goodness is out now via Museumgoer.
