EP REVIEW: Jacko Hooper ‘For You’

If you’re a fan of winsome and introspective men with acoustic guitars, who write songs about the indeterminable nature of love and how fragile their emotions are, then Brighton singer-songwriter Jacko Hooper’s new EP – For You – may indeed be just that. Think Bon Iver with a touch of Devendra Banhart and you’ll have an idea of what to expect. The EP was funded via a Kickstarter campaign and produced by Paul Steel (Empire of the Sun, PNAU), but this is as far from Aussie electronic pop as Brighton is from Bondi Beach. Lead track ‘Egg Shells’ is the best of the four tracks, and despite a risible lyric (“I’m walking on egg shells”) shows that Hooper knows how to write a decent melody. The other three tracks are less immediate, though a live version of ‘Roaming’ stands out and suggests that an intimate, dimly lit room may be the best place to appreciate Hooper’s delicate songs.

For You is released on 30th June via One Inch Badge Records.
