With their first, self-released EP, Colours, having reached No. 7 in the iTunes download alternative charts, Essex-based alternative pop band Youth Club‘s follow up, Brothers, has high expectations. Drawing inspirations from “summer and all things colourful”, the EP boasts a very pre-summer/anticipating summer feeling, which is created by upbeat, warm guitar and synth-filled indie pop tracks.

Brothers, begins with ‘Breathe’, a fast, catchy, indie pop track, that gets things off to a brilliant start, and establishes the happy, summer vibe that runs throughout the other tracks. ‘Breathe’ boasts sincere, soulful vocals and subdued lyrics (“and I feel like I can’t breathe, I’m under water losing time”) that contrast with the overall vibrant, fast-paced pop sound.

The EP gets increasingly slower, with ‘I’m Looking At You’, a more downtempo track, that has well-written, catchy lyrics once again: “I’m not feeling like I did when you picked me up, always thinking of the ways that you let me down”. ‘I’m Looking At You’, like Youth Club’s other tracks, has a whole-hearted, infinitely-catchy, pop chorus.

‘People’ – a slower, softer track – follows this, showcasing the catchiest bridge I have heard so far in 2015. With a funky, chilled chorus, this track is of that rare variety of music that perfectly and successfully bridges the gap between pumped-up Friday night playlist music and chilled-out, Sunday morning, easy-listening tunes.

‘I’ll Give You My All’, a downtempo, heartfelt track, and the contrasting final, indie-rockof ‘Nothing’ highlight Youth Club’s commendable ability of being able to create deep and thoughtful lyric-filled catchy pop tunes. This EP couples soft and sincere vocals and meaningful lyrics, with summery, warm guitar and synths, with the resultant effect of being a perfectly-composed album that has massive potential.
