EP: Zero 7 ‘EP3’

Rating:

Since their debut album in 2001, Zero7 have been at the forefront of British electronica, producing music that is both innovative and captivating. With their new EP soon for release, their consistent approach to creating high quality ambient beats and downtempo rhythms has remained stedfast.

Featuring appearances from artists like Jose Gonzalez, Only Girl and Danny Pratt, the five tracks on the EP have all the hallmarks of that early Zero7 sound that the world has grown to know and love. Having said that, this EP isn’t just a reminiscent trip down memory lane. It appears that in the time the British duo of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker have been together, their music has gone from strength to strength; creating a sound that has a recognisable identity but also a sound that shifts and develops with the ever changing electronic musical landscape.

The EP is full of stand out tracks and ‘400 Blows’, which features previous guest vocalist Danny Pratt, is one of them. Staccato and minimal, the track pulses and hand claps all the way through its three and a half minutes – a positive start. ‘Last Light’, again, has all the characteristics of a laid back classic, this time vocals provided by the unforgettable Jose Gonzales.

It’s positive to know that musical longevity doesn’t always lead to unadventurous creativity. Zero 7 have not only remained true to their distinctive sound but, in time, have become the patriarchs of the British electronic movement, presenting to the world that sometimes less is definitely more. Minimal, cool and current.

EP3 is out now.
