THIS FEELING: Q&A w/ Trampolene + What’s Coming Up at This Feeling

Trampolene are quickly becoming a band that need less and less of an introduction. Following a year that can safely be summarised as successful, the band have performed at both Glastonbury and Isle Of Wight festivals but have also had a four-night residency at London’s Koko, not to mention a support slot with the legendary Buzzcocks. The Swansea trio have now announced the release of their third “pocket”album, as well as a six night tour in association with This Feeling – we caught up with frontman Jack Jones to see how it was going.

Championing premier live music, below are also highlights from the best of This Feeling’s club nights coming up in the near future. If you want to hear fantastic new live music, then This Feeling should be your first port of call.

Let’s start with the announcement of pocket album three, what can you tell us about the album?

It’s four songs and a poem, put together by us in whichever studio would have us with love and care.

I see there’s a sneaky Leonard Cohen cover on there, what led to the decision to do the cover?

It’s a song that I’ve always loved playing – it was originally recorded as a giveaway for our London KOKO gigs, but the boys liked it so much they said we should put it on the record.

What is your favourite of the track on the new album?

I love them all, of course, but ‘No One’s Got Love Like We Got’ has become a secret favourite of mine…I love the feeling of hope the song seems to have.

You’re a tour in conjunction with This Feeling this weekend, how does it feel to be playing a solid block of dates?

It’s amazing. We love touring and can’t wait to do more – bring it on.

Before this tour however, you played a 4 night residency at London’s prestigious Koko, what was that like?

It was surreal…it was completely packed and we all turned to each other during ‘You Do Nothing For Me’ (when everyone was singing along) and said “What’s happening here then!?”. Long may it continue – our followers aren’t just numbers on a page to me, they’re family.

Also, what was it like supporting the legendary Buzzcocks?

It was a privilege. Lovely blokes. It was one of the sweatiest gigs ever.

We know you’re a fan of poetry; how long have you been writing for?

I don’t know. I never thought about lyrics at first – I just wanted to be the greatest guitarist in the world and write great tunes. But I suppose I have always written, even when I was in school and I was told I couldn’t read or write, I still wrote. So to answer the question, I have been writing ever since I could hold a pen.

What leads you to leave the writing as a poem rather than transitioning them into songs?

That’s a good question, a lot of song writing is repetition and sometimes I just have too much that I want to say. It takes me longer to write poems than songs.

You recently parted ways with Kyle, Trampolene’s previous drummer, and introduced Rob – how’s it been going with him so far?

He’s been brilliant and has refreshed everything. I’ve known him since I was 6 years old, we used to play football together when I stayed over my dad’s house on the weekends – Swansea boys.

So, what’s next for Trampolene?

We’ve already started recording the next Pocket Album brother! We’re just gonna keep building up our family – come and join us if you love music and care about being alive.
