THIS FEELING TRACK OF THE DAY: Marvin Powell ‘Opulent Heart’

Slowing down a world that makes little sense at normal speed, Liverpool’s acclaimed six-stringed poet, Marvin Powell, breaks cover to release his first new material of 2018 with the four-track Opulent Heart EP, appearing once more on the talent-heavy roster of Merseyside’s own Skeleton Key Records on 4THMAY. An artist of otherworldy depth, Powell’s wordplay, singular vision and musicianship is distilled by a return to the fundamentals of his craft, the lone voice and acoustic guitar.

The title track sits the listener alongside Powell as he opens the door to his fascinating world once again, following up three, previous single and EP releases on the label with something altogether more intimate. Anchored by repeating melodies chiming beneath the surface of each lightly picked verse, Opulent Heartclimbs gently to a choral refrain, casting complex, literary lyrics over sun-flecked harmonies. The three, accompanying tracks are guided by the same open-heart honesty and singular acoustic dynamism, from the near-pop of Enigma Girl to the forbidding Black Cocoon.

Powell’s latest release comes after three years of writing, recording and live appearances, including nationwide tour supports to label mates The Coral and She Drew The Gun.
