Neo-Soul magic from THE INTERNET

In a world where artists seem not to mind being used as puppets by their record labels, it’s a breath of fresh-air when the music is controlled and distributed by the artist themselves. This DIY approach to one’s art usually results in one thing: artistic integrity. True, it will require some background help and certain crucial contacts, but to be in a position to be able to organically grow the music yourself and then manage the output in-house really does stick two fingers up at the archaic record industry’s business model.

One group doing this with careless abandon is The Internet, part of the Odd Future collective. The dynamic duo of Syd the Kid and Matt Martians release their second album, Feel Good, on 24th September and have just posted the video for the first single, ‘Dontcha’. Though shot with a clean black and white filter, their effortless funk-soul vibe paints a cornucopia of colours that hypnotise whilst at the same time force the listener / viewer to swim deep into the groove. Syd’s vocals, though delicate and airy, sit comfortably over the pulsating bass and spacey keys (which Syd plays too), whilst the drums lay a wonderfully rolling funk rhythm. Usually production is kept in-house, as both Syd and Matt are masters in this area too, but on ‘Dontcha’ production reins are handed over to the ever-reliable Chad Hugo (Neptunes) and Michael Einziger (Incubus), who both make cameos in the video too.

The video embodies everything that The Internet have come to be known for: effortless style, an abundance of funky groove and most importantly, an infectious spirit of true musical craftsmanship. With each angular shimmy shake of Syd’s hips it’s clear that The Internet’s modus operandi is do it yourself, do it the best you can and dance like no-one’s watching.

Despite English being his second language Allan has mastered the art of joined-up writing and stringing sentences together. He's proud of these feats. Whilst in the day he works for a Film company at night he dives majestically into a pool of music, writing and profanity. When he grows up he would like to hear in the street "That's that Armenian lad who sure can write
