Gigslutz interview with CLUB SMITH

Leeds 3 piece Club Smith have been on the playlist in Gigslutz Towers since the release of their debut ‘Appetite for Chivalry’. With their latest offering ‘The Green Room’ being released this week we caught up with Sam from the band to find out a bit more

Hello Sam, for our readers who may not have came across you yet, can you let us know the back ground of your band?

Neil and Lee have the same parents and I lived next door. Me and Neil started playing music together and coaxed Lee into it.  4 bands later we’re Club Smith! Power trio the only thing that remains it seems.

How would you describe your sound?

Self analytical emotional distress soundtracked by blissfully unaware keyboard heavy backing tracks.

Sounds brilliant! So, can you tell us about your new single ‘The Green Room’

“The Green Room” is all about uncertainty, for me it was about not being sure what to feel when my mother died, but generally I hope people hear it and relate to it just being about not being sure where your place in things is.  Which is a pretty generic mid-20s 1st world problem.  It’s the first Club Smith song written, and I’m really proud of the sentiment even if it is a little self indulgent.

Cool. How was it working with Dave Bascombe (Depeche Mode) and Lance Thomas (Ladytron)

Pretty awesome.  Lance seems to know exactly what parts a song needs and the sounds that come with it. Dave Bascombe appears to make a mix outrageously shiny but not over processed. It brought a lot out of us inspiration wise. Serious pros.

Top stuff. So onto more pressing matters, who is the worst member of Club Smith to be in a tour bus with?

This is easily me.  This is because a) I can’t really drive vans very well (crashed one in the past been a nervous/moany driver since), b) I really enjoy bossing people about a bit when I have no place to, c) I like to wind people up unnecessarily, and d) I am a fussy eater and have issues with people eating with their mouths open.   I’m not really an asset I suppose.

Sounds delightful mate! What is the most ‘rock n roll’ moment to have happened to you since you’ve been going?

I’m still building up to this I think.

Fair enough. Good luck with that! We do a monthly radio show and as part of this we ask bands who we feature on Gigslutz to do a mini playlist. Would you like to pick 3 songs for a Club Smith mini play list? These can be anything, guilty pleasure, bands you want to big up, your own songs, anything…!

I have a real 80s pop problem:

How will I know – Whitney Houston

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper

Get into the groove – Madonna

I find these songs totally euphoric.  Something about the bright production, or I possibly want to be a woman. Building up to solving that anomaly too.

Dave the Radio DJ will have them three on pristine 7 inches so that will be no problem. He wants to be a woman too. So what does the future hold for Club Smith?

We’re demoing new songs now, and are doing things sans drummer nowadays so working out drum machines first I think…once that’s sorted you’ll hear new songs I reckon.

Looking forward to it. Thanks mate, is there anything else you’d like to add?

Thanks for picking us out the bunch!

No probs and good luck!
