Gigslutz Interview with RADKEY

Brooklyn noiseniks Radkey have released their debut EP to hype nearly as loud as their hardcore punk racket.  The brothers Radke follow the current trend (The Strypes, The Orwells) of being ridiculously young and absurdly good.  Lead singer Dee’s vocal have shades of 80s Matchbox B-Line Disasters Guy McKnight, while his brothers play fast and furious rock.  The boys talk to Gigslutz about their new release, their ambitions for the band and their influences…

Hello Radkey! Tell us about the new EP.

Cat & Mouse is something that we’re very proud of. We had a blast recording it in our friend’s basement studio in Brooklyn. It was a super relaxed environment (we actually slept in the studio) and we think that you can really hear it on the record.

You are all brothers. How are you finding it working as a band with your siblings?

It’s actually a lot easier than you’d think. We get along really well, and it’s pretty much a breeze to write songs and be in a band when you live with your band. A lot of brothers hate and can’t work together…we’re actually dependant on each other.

Your new EP ‘Cat & Mouse’ has a hardcore punk vibe to it. Which bands would you say influence the album?

We’re pretty inspired by a lot of bands, no bands specifically inspire the EP. We are very inspired by bands like, Weezer, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Ramones, The Misfits, Led Zeppelin, The Who and tons of other stuff.

Are there any other influences on the band outside of music?

Totally. We love movies, comic books, anime, manga, video games and all of that good stuff does inspire the music.

You’re still a very young band (between 15-19). Will you have to wait until your education is finished before you think about touring extensively away from the US?

Nope. Everything’s pretty much ready to go. We’re ready for anything.

What can gig goers expect from a Radkey show?

Loud guitars, tons of energy, sweat and pretty much an all-round good time.

Are there bands around at the moment that you are fans of?

Yeah, we’re pretty big fans of Throne, The Orwells, The So So Glos, Goes cube, The Soft Reeds and the Swayback. We recommend checking out all of those bands.

What are your ambitions for Radkey?

Our goal is to be able to tour the world and live off of playing music until we all die at 27, 25 and 23.

Thanks for your time.

Sam Turner
