Gigslutz Recommends… Chasing the Sun: Oasis 1993-1997 @ Londonewcastle Project Space

Join us for a brand new feature where we’ll be diving headfirst into the wider world of popular culture to uncover the very best in music-related cinema, art, literature and fashion.

This April (11-22) to mark the twentieth anniversary of the release of Oasis’ debut single ‘Supersonic’, Shoreditch’s Londonewcastle Project Space is host to a brand new free exhibition of photos and memorabilia offering unprecedented insight into the Manchester group at their peak.

Chronicling the time from their famous gig at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow which prompted manager Alan McGee to sign the band to the release of the fastest selling album of all time ‘Be Here Now’, the display unquestionably captures one of the most exciting eras in the history of rock ‘n’ roll.

Curated by photographer Lawrence Watson, the exhibit features many rare and candid images from his archive as well as those of fellow snappers Paul Slattery, Kevin Cummins and Jill Furmanovsky. Alongside that is previously unseen audio-visual content of the band including footage of their performances at the 100 Club and Knebworth. More tantalising than all of that however is the chance to see the several iconic artifacts donated by the band in person including Noel Gallagher’s infamous Union Jack Gibson guitar, Liam Gallagher’s parka and much more besides.

As if the Gigslutz stamp of approval weren’t enough, the NME reports that even Liam and original guitarist Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs themselves have stopped by, only to be inevitably besieged by fans asking for photos with the pair. For those old enough to have experienced Oasis’ glory years the first time around, this exhibition will be an amazing and insightful trip down memory lane but for those too young to understand the practical application of a Kangol bucket hat, it should prove an invaluable, some might say, indispensable education.

Elliott Homer is an undisputed master of understatement, a black belt holder in mixed metaphors and long-time deserving of some such award for length of time spent chatting rubbish about music down the pub. Studies show prolonged exposure to his scribblings can cause migraines, hysterical pregnancy, night terrors and/or acne, yet seldom encourages readers to agree with the author, in fact quite the reverse, much to his eternal frustration.
