Morain – ‘Worlds Apart’ EP Review

Following the success of their last EP – 2012’s ‘Are We Lost?’ – Wakefield four-piece, Morain, now give us their latest EP, ‘Worlds Apart’. The strength of this creation shows that the year and a half spent lapping up their new success with endless gigs and writing new material has been far from wasted.

Opening track ‘Who Would’ve Known?’ (released as a single February 24th) is essentially summer in a song. It sets the tone for the EP as we’re introduced to the nostalgia that it presents: “I’ve been reading the words that you wrote, from letter to letter, I wish I was home”. We are instantly introduced to the power of the band, and expect nothing less for the rest of the EP.

The second track, ‘Strangers’, cements my belief that Morain are a solid band. The vocals are effortlessly powerful, accompanied by an equally powerful instrumental portraying exactly the emotion that this EP should carry. Strangers, again, is reminiscent of summer (past summer romances, perhaps?), with sweeping choruses that make you wish you knew the words just so you could join in.

The EP takes a slightly more emotional turn in the form of ‘Fighting With the Devil’. Again, the vocal skills of Will Frost are shown off in this track, proving that he can do gentle just as well as he can do powerful. This track manages to completely shift the mood, offering goosebump-raising harmonies and incredible soft guitar; a necessary and effective break in the EP.

‘Alive’, whilst sticking with the formality of powerful vocals and big choruses, once again changes the mood completely – a complete contrast to Fighting With the Devil. For the last track, Morain ditch the negativity and nostalgia, and instead offer a glimmer of hope, a light at the end of the tunnel – “Everyone’s alive, and this is the start of our new lives”. Had the sheer talent offered throughout the EP not been uplifting enough, I may have been a little upset if the lyrics had ended on a downer; instead, however, the positivity of Alive is merely an added bonus among many.

Alongside the release of the EP, expect tour dates: definitely not ones to miss!
