Gigslutz Unsigned: The Gramotones – ‘Old Man Song EP’

Currently unsigned, The Gramotones have now released their second EP featuring ‘Old Man Song’, ‘Sorry For You Now’ and ‘Daltry Street’. Produced by Steve Pilgrim (drummer for Paul Weller) and recorded at Paul Weller’s Black Barn Studios, the EP highlights both the band’s catchy melodies and lyrical observations of everyday life.

Lead song ‘Old Man Song’ opens in a manner that somehow reminds me of The Stone Roses’ ‘Garage Flower’ sound and is accompanied by an interesting video featuring Jake and Sid from the band dressed as women as they push an old man about in a wheelchair. The song itself reflects the energy the Gramotones convey when playing live and is guitar driven with an intensity that is perfectly balanced with the vocal harmonies that define the Gramotones’ sound. Despite the song title, ‘Sorry For You Now’ is an upbeat tune: the song itself is instantly catchy and suggestively reminiscent of influences from artists such as Squeeze. In contrast, final track ‘Daltry Street’ is a stripped back number with an emphasis on vocals and reflective lyrics pondering the changes on ‘Daltry Street’.  All in all, the EP does well in capturing the sound of the Gramotones and showcases their diverse sound.

With songs like these, it’s not surprising many people are talking positively about the Gramotones, and I can well imagine thousands of fan singing along with the band in the near future!
