UNDER THE INFLUENCE: Martin Ikin

Being asked to list 10 influential tracks was really quite hard. There are so many genres that have influenced me…  I decided to keep it strictly House.  These 10 records have genuinely had an influence on my music making career. There’s many many more I could add to this, but these were the ones that came to mind without even thinking.

Go and check em out if there’s any you don’t know 🙂

Martin Ikin plays Brixton Jamm this Friday. For more info and tickets click HERE

Mayday – Wiggin

The bassline, the pattern & the sound was just so brand new, blew me away. I paid homage to this monster bassline in my track Nothing To Fear. It does the first half of his pattern just once at 3:17 🙂

Adonis – No Way Back

Again the bassline was so infectious, once you heard it, it stuck with you forever. And the vocal with the super tight delay making it sound all futuristic. Killer!

Mr Fingers – Amnesia

I could name all the records Larry made in this era as my influences, they were all just so good. Ive gone for this one because i played it to death. And the way it starts with that bassline sound… Too good!

Nitro Delux – Lets Get brutal

One of the first records I remember spending my dinner money on. What a riff.!

LFO – Track 4

I could talk about this record all day… The main sound is so sick, even today it sounds like its come straight from another planet. I was lucky enough to speak to Mark Bell and ask him how he made this record. RIP a True Pioneer!!

Kevin Saunderson – Bassline

Of course I had to have something from the Master Reese himself, so many to choose from, I went for this one though, Its a bit later, 1991 I think, but it was so quirky it still makes me smile hearing it now. The title says it all. Check it at 3 mins when its just beats & Bassssss 🙂

Neil Howard – Indulge

Master piece by Mr Howard. Everything in this record was just perfect, riff, piano, pads, loved it.

T Coy – Carino

Being a piano player this was right up my street, classic piano house music from 1987.

Masters At Work – Justa Lil Dope

Back in ’91 we all used to play this at 45rpm at the raves instead of 33rpm. Absolutely raucous!!!

Virgo – R U Hot Enough

1986 at its absolute finest. Playing this record takes me straight back to the 80’s when I was at school and just discovering House Music. A genuine classic. ”
