INTERVIEW: Clay @ Bingley Music Live

As part of our festival coverage at this year’s Bingley Music Live, Gigslutz had the opportunity to interview one of Leeds’ most promising new bands – Clay. We discuss singles, dressing room antics and what the future holds for the band!

Firstly, how was your performance at Bingley?

There was a man wearing a mask of a horse, which was odd – but yeah good! Was the mask code for something?

As festival season is coming to an end, how has it been for you all?

Thoroughly enjoyed it; a humbling experience! These last couple of weeks we’ve been playing shows in the north – Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds etc… getting those places nailed. So to play some places that are genuinely massive like Bingley and R&L is incredible. It feels like we’re playing for crowds we’ve aimed to play for.

Was Reading and Leeds the highlight of the summer?

Yes, definitely! (Nothing against Bingley or its folk)

Do you prefer festivals or smaller club venues?

The atmosphere on a big stage is great but I like getting up close and personal… a bit sweaty with the audience. At festivals everyone’s quite far away but in a small venue in say Sheffield, there’s a magic about it.

Recently This Feeling/Gigsutz had you’re single as track of the day. Can you tell us about the track?

Its called Sundance! Before we started off as a band, Gigslutz and This Feeling were both massive to us. So when we played a club night it was fantastic, only to be honoured with a review.

What do you think of the name [Giglutz]?

We fxxking love it! It’s always awkward when my Granddad questions it though.

So, for our readers who haven’t come across Clay yet, how would you describe the band?

We pride our sound on being unique and try not to be like many others. A lot of younger people listen to loads of music so they draw connections with Blur/Charlatans. We try and have noting cover us. We don’t go “oh we love that blur b-side, lets do that!” we just write songs we love to listen to.

Can you describe the band in 3 words?

Fucking mega mate!

Most rock and roll moment to date?

Dressing room moment… cleaned up with what we thought was a bit of cloth, turns out it was the headliners coat she was wearing on stage, so this is a public apology!

Are there any other bands you’re into at the moment?

We love Blossoms, they’re brilliant. We also hate a lot of bands, but we better not shame any at this stage! We like Slaves!

Desert Island disc?

Oasis, Definitely Maybe – easy!

Sweets or Crisps?

Sweets!

Summer or Winter?

Winter because in Leeds there’s a German market and its sick!

What can we expect form Clay in the future?

We want to be big and everything in between but we have to keep working hard. We’ve got some good shows coming up. Keep writing songs that are better than ok!
