Interview: Kate Tittley Speaks To Section 60

Section 60 are Sheffield’s most recent contribution to indie music.  They pride themselves on being northern lads playing quality guitar music.  Sounds good, no?  Well, yes.  Buuuuttt we want to know a little more about them, like what makes one northern cool, unnecessarily moustached posh boys and the state of music and pub snacks.  Covering all bases aren’t we!  Read on…

GS: Morning Boys! Lets dive right in a go straight to the new single Welcome to the Dream Factory. Got stuck humming it for ages so well done! Based on actual experience or more of a metaphor?

S6: I wish it was an actual experience. It would take a lot of substance abuse to get there I think. It’s a glimmer of hope in the back of your mind as you trawl through the daily grind, that things could get better.

GS: Your press says that this Northern Laddish cool can be seen as a stereotype but is in fact a way of life, a very good point and totally agree. What would you say is integral to it? Experience, mentality, good jackets, all of the above, something completely different?

S6: Yes all the above and more. And I don’t think the way of life is specific to any genre of music either. We’ve got mates who live by the same path as us but are into dance music, hip hop whatever music. We are not into one type of music. Everyone’s got their own twist on it. But you know when you bump into us or them, what wavelength we are all on.

GS: Tell us more about how you got to where youre at now, the gig circuit and getting signed?

S6: All you can do is put records out and gig in the right way. Not just play anywhere and everywhere every week. Make a gig worthwhile otherwise it takes the shine off you. And it takes time. Unless you’re lucky as fuck. Also, word of mouth is still more important as fucking internet views and all that bollocks.

GS: Agree! So I read that one of you once hit the other with a table before a gig…standard Rock n Roll antics or do you think you can be a band on the edge? The band name is a tad antagonistic…;)

S6: I don’t know about a band on the edge. But there are definitely 5 people in this band who are on the edge, on the edge of what? I’m still unsure though. Anyway everybody has a bit of table throwing in them at some stage. It’s whether they happen to be near a table or not at the time. As for our name, take out an ‘I’ and a ‘T’, stick a big fat ‘E’ in there and we’ll be Section Sexy. All the girlies will dig us.

GS: Ha! I absolutely loved your quote on making it in the music industry I think to make it in the music game these days youve got to have a private education, a tache and look like you havent had a wash for a fucking week, oh, and be able to play ten fucking instruments throughout a gig, You cant just stand there in a CP jacket playing your guitar and looking cool as fuck anymore I happen to agree for the most part! Can you explain how the cool as fuck comes across in the music?

S6: I don’t think ‘cool as fuck’ can be explained. It’s the way something or someone makes you feel. We will be that to some people. And others will think we aren’t ‘different’. Oooo ‘different’ “When did different replace ‘quality. Of course that crowd are gonna play ten instruments. They can fuckin afford ’em can’t they. We can only afford one instrument and a razor. By the time they’ve sound checked the ten instruments obviously it leaves no time for personal hygiene.

GS: And also based on the above, any bands around that you actually like at the mo or are your influences a bit older?

S6: I like a lot of curent artists. But i dont love em. They all seem to have the singles but not the albums that will be passed down the generations. The acts that influence us are there in our songs. Little snips of all of ‘‘em put together to make section 60.

GS: Right, so youve had an EP out, plans for a full lengther or more touring?

S6: I think we are due a full album. That’s next year’s plan. That’ll give me time to grow a ‘tache.

GS:  What would be the big goal thing for you guys? Or have you already semi-done it?

S6: I don’t think there’s ever been a goal that’s been talked about. Talking about goals is quite alien to us being Sheffield Utd fans, we don’t see many. But I’m sure we would all love to say to our gaffers, “I won’t be coming in next week, I play guitar for a living now.”

GS:  Lets end a bit lighter, in your video I see guys chugging on some pints of smooth. So tell me, ultimate bar tipple and snacks for Section 60?

S6: Guinness, Desperados, and a good cheese board. The drummer has a scampi fries fetish but that’s another story.

GS: And finally, as good looking band full of manly men. Your last hundred notes – jacket, trainers or football and a piss up?

S6: I’d back a horse with 3 legs called section 60. It would win the race by using a table to take out the other runners. So then I could have all the above and much more.

When not making cocktails for Manchester's finest, Le Titts is most likely to be found the other side of the bar in a cloud of smoke and wine musing loudly over her fantasy band line up, love of the album format and why nothing is better than The Stone Roses. And then spilling the wine...Loving the ride with GigSlutz.
