Interview: Kristyna Myles

Having just released her album, ‘Pinch Me Quick’, which has been endorsed by Paul Weller as ‘absolutely stunning’, Kristyna Myles is fast becoming widely recognised for her beautiful voice and song writing talent. Gigslutz’ Bazza Mills caught up with her to talk about her new album, favourite book and more!

Hi Kristyna, how’s tricks?

I’m very well thanks, in the middle of my album tour which has been going really well, it’s been incredible to see so much support.

Congratulations on your album ‘Pinch Me Quick’ – what were the highlights in recording this album?

Recording with my band who I studied at uni with, we’re all good friends and each night we took it in turns to cook dinner. Baz’s (my bass player) ratatouille was legendary.

The Paris Match has drawn a bit of attention from TSC fans. Can you tell me how this one came about?

I was privileged to be invited to perform at Steve White’s (The Style Council Drummer) 30 year in industry concerts around the UK and Steve asked me to sing a few of his favourite songs he’s been involved with. The Paris Match was one of those songs. When we performed it each night, TSC fans loved it and expressed an interest in me releasing it as a single so I thought why not?! It’s a hauntingly beautiful song and there was demand so I took my chance and went for it!

I also heard Ben from The Moons played drums on your album and with the Paris Match featuring on the album I am picking-up u may be a Weller inspired ‘Modess/Modette??

Ben Gordelier played percussion on a few tracks. It was a coincidence the Weller connection there! Ken Nelson who produced the album knows Ben well. Bonus though!!

So what were your thoughts on the response from fans to your new material?

I was overwhelmed by the support, seeing so many people come to support me at my album launch gigs and lovely Facebook messages, emails and tweets- it feels incredible. It’s funny that so many people have different favourite’s from the album too, it’s great everyone has different tastes and preferences.

The world-famous Barrowland is just around the corner. Do you have a few venues you would really love to play?

My dream is to play the Manchester Apollo one day. I remember as a student at uni I went to see Jools Holland there and at one point i was filled with so much emotion and drive that I desperately wanted to perform there one day. I remember turning to my friend to say just that and she said “then you will”! If I’m blessed to play there in the future that’ll be incredible! I’ve played some other incredible places- London Hammersmith apollo, Cylde Auditorium with Chris De Burgh, Kew Gardens supporting Will Young & Nile Rogers, on an out door stage infront of 6,000 people in Jersey which ive absolutely loved & am so grateful for. There’s just something special about that moment 10 years or so ago that would mean I’ve come full circle.

What has been your favourite venue you have played to date?

My fav was probably Jersey’s big gig in the park. It was an outdoor stage and there were 6,000 people in the audience, you couldn’t see the ground, just a sea of people! I was performing with my band in gorgeous sunshine with an appreciative audience, what more could you ask for?!

Some fast and furious questions for you now:

What was the first single that you bought?

I remember I should be so lucky by Kylie being sung a lot every where i went. I think it was her album i bought though, well my parents bought for me 🙂

Last album?

Bird to Beast

Artist that has inspired you the most?

Imelda May for taking the slow road to success in music. She’s turning 40 this year, looks amazing and has gigged all her life and finally getting the recognition she deserves.
Last movie you enjoyed?

What to expect when you’re expecting- hilarious!

Current book you’re reading?

Ashamed to say I’m not a massive reader. The only book I have on the go is the Bible which I dip into with the help of daily devotionals.

Complete the sentence…The Artist I would most like to duet with……….

Is more list of artists- Gregory Porter would be at the top right now.

Ok a few more questions to finish off.

What do you get up to when are not writing/playing?

Chilling with my husband and doggy mr beefy, going on trips in our campervan & exploring the countryside. I love watching movies and catching up with friends and family over a good cup of coffee (& slice of cake!)

Any big future plans or things on your ‘To-Do List’ outside of music?

I’d love to learn to play guitar (technically that’s still music but hey) build a house with my husband.

What are you hoping to get out of 2014?

I turn 30 in May so my goal of releasing my debut album before im 30 has come to fruition woo hoo! To reach new audiences and to start on album 2! I have well over an albums worth of material so here we go!

Thank you for your time and I wish you all the best for 2014!
