INTERVIEW: Matt and Kim

Following the release of their latest brillant full length album ‘New Glow’ Brooklyn duo Matt and Kim are set to hit the road with Fall Out Boy this October to play some of the biggest dates of their career. As the tour approaches Gigslutz catches up with Kim to get find out more about the Indie Dance couplet….

Hi Kim, how the devil are you?

Great! I am two lattes and two PG Tips in so this could get crazy!

You are about to join Fall Out Boy on tour, including a couple of massive shows at Wembley Arena, how are you feeling leading up to them?

I’m excited! We just took a week and a half off and for us that is too long! We love playing shows so this has felt like the longest week. That just means I’m going to play harder on the first show back. We have yet to meet Fall Out Boy but we have mutual friends and everyone says they are so nice! Can’t wait for the tour to start!

For any UK crowds who haven’t yet experienced a Matt & Kim live show, what can they expect?

Expect to get dirty, to hear me say some dirty shit, we will ask you for favors, we will give you everything we got and we just want everyone to have a fucking good time!

Your music is quite hard to pin down to one genre – how would you describe it?

We struggled with this for awhile. It seems like we don’t fit in one genre.  What we have been saying is Indie Dance.

‘New Glow’ is a brilliant album, how have you found the reaction to it?

First…thank you so much!! The reaction has been great! I feel like we have a little bit of everything on there. If you liked Daylight or Let’s Go but then we have the dance-ier stuff like Hey Now or Stirred Up. I am very proud of this album.

Do you have a favoutite track on the album?

It’s tough because it depends on my mood. Like ‘Hey Now’ makes me want to dance, ‘Can You Blame Me’ makes me want to change the world, ‘World Is Ending’ makes me want to destroy the world and then something like ‘I See Ya’ makes me want to cry. Gosh when I write this out it also sounds like if you put that all together into one day that is me PMSing. My ladies know what I’m talking about!

You got your fans to make their own videos for ‘Can You Blame Me’ – how has the take up been on that? Any that have particularly impressed you?

We actually just finished the submissions and it is being edited. I loved seeing them all but I will say my favorite has been one that has a guy getting his ass kicked, binge drinking, fireworks and ending with being hit by a train.

Will there be a Matt & Kim headline UK tour at some stage?

YES!!!! I am not sure when yet but we want this to happen…no, this straight just needs to happen.

Whilst you’re over in the UK, are there any sites you are going to take in?

I have a lot of family here. My nana was a war bride. So basically my grandad was over here. Knocked her up and then when the war got pretty bad sent her to the U.S.  When I was a kid my aunts and uncles would come visit. It is nice to finally be able to come here and visit them and to finally meet my cousins. The last time we were here we met them at a pub at 11am to start drinking. I like how my family rolls!!

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I have to say I think I didn’t get too crazy with all this caffeine in me. How about next time we do another interview I’ll put a bottle of wine in me first! I bet it will be way dirtier…. actually maybe that’s a bad idea!!
