INTERVIEW: The Hurt’s Rikki Turner

Rikki Turner is a man of some pedigree having fronted the legendary Paris Angels alongside the enigmatic Paul “Wags” Wagstaff. The pair have recently joined forces again and as they prepare to launch their new project The Hurt we catch up with Rikki himself to find out more about it

Hi Rikki, thanks for taking the time out to answer the questions. How are you and where can we find you answering these questions?

I am currently at home, watching Paris Texas, drinking milk….

Lovely! You’ve recently announced the arrival of your new band The Hurt. Can you tell us how the idea to form the band came about?

The idea for the Hurt came after I left The New Southern Electrikk, I wanted a more Electronic feel to what I was writing.

Why the name “The Hurt” ?

The Hurt came after a poem I wrote.

You’re working with Wags agains – is the old magic still there?

Haha. Wags… Well we have both been friends for about 30 yrs.. Yes there’s still the same old something. We just know how to laugh.

The band also includes Keith Higgins and Jack Scraggs – how did they come about getting involved?

I’ve know Jack through my daughter and knew he was a drummer, just seemed natural to ask him and Keith came on the recommendation of the photographer Paul Husband.

What is the song writing process within the band?

I guess the process is me writing a song coming up with a melody and then passing it on the other fellas.

Are there any other people working with you on the project?

Yes, there are other people who are involved, we work as a collective. With us four as the core. There are few people involved in the next release.

The first single is the brilliant “Berlin” – can you tell us a little bit about that?

Arh! Berlin… Well it’s a love song, written about the fall, plunder… and the fate of its people.

How do you find being in a band now compared to when you started out with The Paris Angels?

A lot has changed with the music industry. It some ways its easier to put out music and get it heard, but so hard for original bands to come through with advent of celebrity TV and such.

Whats next for the band? Is there album & live plans?

We will start work on a new EP very soon with some surprise guests. Live, I am in no rush. Thinking summertime

Cheers Rikki – we will look forward to that.

Thanks Steve
