Introducing Interview: Federal Unicorn

Danish trio Federal Unicorn create high octane, grunge-inspired offerings and are fast becoming known across Europe for their energy-fuelled live shows.

With a new EP out now, we caught up with Federal Unicorn to find out more…

Hi Federal Unicorn, welcome to Gigslutz, how are you today?
Very good, like a sandwich spread.

Can you tell us a bit more about Federal Unicorn?
We are three-piece from Aarhus, Denmark. Our sound is influenced by grunge and brit-rock, with hints of pop here and there. We really love what we do.

What’s the story behind your latest EP Substances?
The record is about overcoming your demons and learning to embrace the darkness, when it comes for you. The songs breed both the problem, as well as the solution, not literally of course, but between the lines. Moreover, it took us some time to figure out our sound and genre as a band, and with this release we feel like we have finally achieved that.

What’s the music scene like at the moment in Denmark and other parts of Scandinavia?
Being a part of the scene, it would appear that rock bands are popping up left and right. Good bands also. Denmark is a small country, and the mainstream channels are mostly consumed by pop and hip hop, but the rock genre is becoming the new talk of the town.

What’s the next step for Federal Unicorn?
Making a full length album and getting some shows for 2017.

Who are your top 3 favourite artists?
Nirvana, Kings of Leon (early), Libertines.

Can you describe your sound in 5 words?
My wine tastes like cigarettes

Huge thanks to Federal Unicorn for answering our questions!

Substances, the new EP from Federal Unicorn, is out now via Tapetown Records.
