Introducing Interview: Freja

Having first started writing songs at just nine years of age, Freja is a unique singer-songwriter who creates simply beautiful tracks. With lyrics that flow with a moving intimacy accompanied by folk-inspired melodies, Freja’s debut EP Ghosts is a testament to just what this young woman is capable of.

Hi Freja! How have you been?
Hey, I’ve been good thanks!

Your latest single ‘Ghosts In the Snow’ has been getting a lot of plays on Soundcloud, are you pleased?
Yeah, it’s great that so many people have listened to the track and I’m glad it’s getting such a good reception.

What’s the story behind the song?
The title came from a line in a My Chemical Romance song that had been on my mind for a while. I’d originally wanted to use it as a band name but eventually decided to use it as a song title instead. What I love about lyric writing is that a song can mean something different to every single person that listens to it. Even looking back on my own songs I like to think about different meanings they could have, so I wouldn’t want to limit the possibilities of the story of ‘Ghosts in the Snow’ by just giving one take on it.

What is your debut EP Ghosts all about?
There’s not really a theme to my EP, though all the tracks are minimal. I wanted to release my music chronologically, so these are the best of my earliest songs.

How did you get into songwriting?
I’ve been writing since I was a child; I used to write poetry, then I saw the film School of Rock, which I loved, so I started writing song lyrics instead. After a few years, I gave up the rock band idea and began writing piano accompaniments to my songs.

Have you ever thought about bringing in a whole band to enhance your sound?
Yeah definitely, I love working with other people on musical projects. I’m planning on recording my next release with session musicians and I’m really looking forward to developing my sound.

What can we expect from you in 2016?
I’ll be playing more gigs and hopefully a couple of festivals over summer. I’ll also be recording two singles, which will be released in autumn.

Are you playing any live shows soon?
I’m playing a Sofar Session in London on 13th January, which is a members’ only gig, but a film of my set will be available on You Tube later in January. I’m also playing at Oxford University on 6th February as part of a disability awareness week, and I’m playing at The Spice of Life in London on Sunday 10th April.
