Introducing Interview: Matt And The Beanstalk

With influences ranging from Kate Bush to Darwin Deez, Nottingham-based artist Matt And The Beanstalk has just released his debut single.

Produced by Newcastle-based Bramwell Bronte, ‘Symphony’ oozes anthemic, sweeping melodies and emotion-strewn vocals. Telling the story of an angel struggling to believe in herself, the track is an impassioned and uplifting offering, flowing with a musically rich grandeur.

We caught up with Matt to find out more…

Hello, my name is Matt, and I am Matt And The Beanstalk!

Can you tell us a bit more about Matt And The Beanstalk and the reason behind the name?
It’s just a bit silly and different really, I’m kind of tall and somewhat resemble a beanstalk so that’s the official answer, haha.

What’s the story behind your debut single ‘Symphony’?
It’s about a girl or an angel – she’s really great and works extremely hard, but she’s never satisfied with what she’s achieved despite it being more than what most people will achieve in their whole entire lives. So, the song is about her hard work and her frustration.

Is there an album in the works or any more singles on the horizon?
I’m already working on the next two singles and a EP… I’m always writing and recording so who knows, if I can get myself a little following maybe an album will appear sooner than anyone thinks.

If you had to compare yourself to any other artists out there right now, who would they be and why?
I think sound-wise, this single is very much like the vibes of Bastille or Imagine Dragons? It’s soft rock, but then really brassy indie, and then there’s a story in the lyrics, which I feel really resembles the storytelling and songwriting of those two artists.

Who would you say are three of your most influential artists?
My three all time influences are Darwin Deez, Kate Bush, and Hall and Oates. I actually met Darwin Deez once and had an hour-long conversation with him in the Bodega backstage toilets in Nottingham. That conversation inspired me so much, he’s a really great guy!

What’s the next step for Matt And The Beanstalk?
I would say more releases, my next single is really really cool, I really can’t wait to put that one out there. I would love to do some live shows also but I’ll need to gather a band of merry men to pull that off.

Can you describe your sound in 3 words?
Brassy, happy, epic.

Matt Damon or Ben Affleck?
Ok, so for me this question screams ‘Pearl Harbour’ or ‘Saving Private Ryan’, I love both films, so I’m going to have to base it on how much of a 10/10 dickhead Damon was in ‘Interstellar’ and give this round to Affleck…
