Introducing Interview: SHVLLOWS

Since releasing their debut single ‘Shake’ back in April, Scottish electro-pop band SHVLLOWS have quickly been receiving acclaim and increased popularity.

Exploring themes of anxiety and self-doubt through their atmospheric pop sounds, SHVLLOWS create anthemic, vibrant offerings.

With a new single out in September, we caught up with the band to find out more…

Welcome to Gigslutz, please introduce yourselves!
Hey Gigslutz, we are Scottish electro-pop group SHVLLOWS. Pleasure to speak with you!

Tell us a bit more about SHVLLOWS.
We have enjoyed a rapid rise from obscurity following the release and subsequent wide spread success of our highly anticipated debut single, ‘Shake’. We have caught the attention of prominent radio presenters around the world, and are championed by the voice of unsigned Scottish music, Jim Gellatly and BBC Radio Scotland.

What’s the story behind your latest single ‘Zurich’?
‘Zurich’ deals with the themes of anxiety and self-doubt, and the extreme lengths to which people will go to overcome them. The verses of the song follow the main protagonist who is suffering from these emotions, whilst the choruses promote positivity, and the overwhelming message that no one is ever truly alone.

If you had to compare yourselves to any other artists out there right now, who would they be and why?
If we had to describe our music as a mix of already established artists we would go with our favourites Everything Everything, mixed in with St.Lucia and Chvrches.

Your single ‘Zurich’ includes a selection of catchy melodies. How do you normally go about the writing process as a band?
Thank you! We actually write the majority of our songs via Dropbox, sending each other little ideas and just building them up from there until we have a full structure. At which point we start performing them live as a band and tweaking them until we feel they are finished. We must have at least 15 songs ready to play live, ridiculous actually.

What is the next step for SHVLLOWS?
We would be lying if we said we didn’t want to travel across the world and play music as a full time job, but realistically our main milestones are releasing the debut album and headline tours across the UK, before eventually going out towards the rest of Europe and the States and eventually getting back together for a comeback tour when we are long past it!

Who are three of your most influential artists?
The artists that breathe life into all of our music are: Everything Everything, Sigur Ros, Prince, Michael Jackson, Foals and our new favourite St Lucia.

Describe your sound in 3 words.
Uplifting, Atmospheric and Passionate.

UFC or WWE?
Nakamura vs Zayn. Enough said. Thank you for your time!

Huge thanks to SHVLLOWS for answering our questions.

Zurich’, the new single from SHVLLOWS, is out 16 September via Choose Rude Records.
