Just four months after announcing the re-release of Commercial Zone, the former Clash guitarist and long-time musical devil Keith Levene has yet again revealed another impending edition of Public Image Ltd’s ‘lost fourth album’.
This time round ‘limited’ is very much the key word that you’d be looking for to describe what’s at stake: each CD is accompanied by a custom-made cover by the artist himself, not to mention a recording of the album that features Levene, and only Levene, as the sole instrumentalist and singer for 20 out of 21 of the originally produced tracks. Of the one song that did get to include another musician, Levene chose John Robb (of Goldblade fame) to produce vocals for the fittingly titled ‘The Voice of Punk Rock’: a firm ally in his fight against musical homogenisation and the status quo.
A welcome addition to any fan’s shelf, Commercial Zone 2014 has come to represent more than another stab at a previously neglected body of work. Levene has variously described the project as embracing “the original and proper PiL ethos”, and “unfinished business”. As his recently released book, Meeting Joe: Joe Strummer, The Clash and Me also made clear, there’s a fair amount of setting the record straight in this man’s agenda of late – and with endlessly fascinating new and updated tracks and writings doing the job, few amongst us will complain.
