LISTEN: VANDANA – ‘Jaan’

Taken from VANDANA‘s EP Nox Anima, ‘Jaan’ is something of a curio, its synthed pulse giving life to a song borne of Brooklyn by way of an Indian childhood and a London education. It’s the newest offering from New York’s newer New Wave, a sound desaturated of colour and heavy on texture and eclecticism.

‘Jaan’ puts one in mind of the sound effects resolutely achieved by Vangelis or of the low-lying cityscapes evoked by Jan Hammer’s considered desk work. VANDANA – as a modern composer of pop – possesses an ear and eye which one day might better be engaged by a film industry in need of idiosyncrasy and invention (as it currently does). Right now she can go in any direction she chooses. Lens friendly, she’s also an effortless creator of mood with one foot buried ankle deep in the flavours of Qawwali. An engaging addition to the New York pantheon.
