LIVE: Youth Hostel, Liverpool Sound City, 28.05.16:

Already attracting a fanatical following locally and national airplay (both Radio 2 and 6Music); Youth Hostel could best be described as an atypical/typical Scouse band. It’s meat and potatoes rock’n’roll; when Liverpool music has decided to float off on a completely opposite tide.

The good stuff first: it’s good, rowdy stuff; Britpop that has just graduated from Uni. There is brass there too. I like a bit of brass – I always think I am gonna get Dexy’s when I see a trombone, but it added some nice flourishes to the music. They also had the brassneck to cover ‘World Shut Your Mouth’ by Julian Cope and get away with it. It’s an audacious trick that just about comes off.

Unfortunately, they are fronted by a laaad in an Adidas trackie. He has the laconic boasts of Liam Gallagher. He also has the sexual politics, circa 1994. Back announcing one song to say “there’s loads of fuckin’ well fit birds here today”. See also: I was born, raised and live in Liverpool. I am extremely suspicious of those from the city who turn the Scouseness up to 11 for a crowd. Youth Hostel are “giving it bifters up here’ and this next tune is “fuckin’ boss”.

It’s a shame that this gobby nonsense taints what is actually quite good. Youth Hostel has the potential to be the next great band out of Liverpool. Let’s throw the lead singer a copy of The Female Eunuch rather than a sticky copy of Loaded and see what happens.
