Liverpool To Host Major New Music Festival

Liverpool – the beating heart of the nation’s music scene – is to host the UK’s newest music festival, Liverpool International Music Festival.

Boasting a line up as diverse as it is impressive, Liverpool International Music Festival takes place between 18 August and 22 September at multiple venues across the city.

Acts confirmed to date range from rock icons such as Neil Young and Crazy Horse to pop chart-toppers JLS, Little Mix and Eliza Doolittle to homegrown legends Soul II Soul to an incredible array of world music artists featuring Trinidadian megastar Machel Montano and British Indian singer-songwriter Navin Kundra.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra are set to perform a specially commissioned piece written by chief composer the globally renowned Vasily Petrenko on an open air stage in Sefton Park. This spectacular outdoor arena will be a platform for a myriad of different music genres over the bank holiday weekend culminating with Pop In The Park headlined by Soul II Soul and supported by Liverpool Legends The Christians, Deaf School and Connie Lush.

The festival also encompasses the alternative Summer Camp Festival showcasing the highly acclaimed Mount Kimbie, Ghostpoet and Martha Wainwright, The annual International Beatleweek and the 2013 Liverpool Music Awards. A dynamic fringe festival will also run alongside proceedings with more than 100 events taking place in pubs and clubs across the city.

The Liverpool International Music Festival is part of the legacy of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2008. Conceived by Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson and Director of Culture Claire McColgan, the festival is curated by Yaw Owusu, a Liverpudlian and music visionary who saw an opportunity to remind the world that Liverpool is still at the very heart of the international music scene.

Said Yaw: “Liverpool International Music Festival is focused on three things; celebrating greatness, discovering the new and inspiring the next.  We want people to discover the DNA of a global music city and be surprised and inspired by the collection and scope of artists, spaces, events and collaborations in place.

“With an amazing line-up already confirmed we’ve got some incredibly high-profile acts up our sleeves to announce closer to the launch.  One city, 35 days, 250 performances. It’s going to be an unforgettable experience!”
