Metronomy share brand new track ‘Lately’, plus Joseph Mount-directed video

Following an incendiary performance at All Points East last weekend, Metronomy return to share their brand new track ‘Lately’. Fresh from premiering on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show last night and taken from their forthcoming sixth album that will follow in the autumn, ‘Lately’ represents the first new material from Joe Mount’s electronic indie pop group since 2016’s ‘Summer 08’ album.

‘Lately’ is sublime. Both inventive and ear-grabbing, the song captures the most immediate and enticing side of Metronomy’s sonic spectrum. From the glistening synths to the animated beats and a chugging guitar riff, it carries the elative summer atmosphere that Mount and co. have become renowned for, now through a fresh radio-friendly sheen.

In contrast, the lyrics remind us that even idyllic circumstances require their own maintenance, an oiling of the cogs, to keep them crunching along. Mount sings, “That is love and it’s hard to do, it’s a job for two. What do I do if I don’t get nothing from you?”

The official video for ‘Lately’ represents a landmark in the Metronomy journey as Mount makes his directorial debut. Highly memorable and with a nod to ‘80s classic film ‘Honey I Shrunk The Kids’, the video features a shrunken Metronomy emerging from an old school cassette tape left on a school girl’s bed.

Mount says, “This music video is a pop promo in the grand tradition of pop promos: End of school on a Friday afternoon, Mysterious little people that live in a cassette tape, concerned parents and special FX. The song and video are both about growing up.

I’ve absolutely loved taking the opportunity to direct our own music videos. I have quite strong opinions on what music videos are for in 2019 and how they should be presented and this has been a chance for me to put my money where my mouth is!

The most impressive thing I’ve realised is how much of a group effort creating a music video is. I’ve always known it, but this time I’ve obviously worked much closer with the various characters, involved in every department. So, thank you to them.”

Since Metronomy’s last album, in addition to working on his own music, Mount has been producing and songwriting for other artists. He produced and/or co-wrote six of the nine songs from Robyn’s ‘Honey’ album – a set that figured prominently on numerous influential album of the year polls including Noisey, Q, Pitchfork, The Telegraph and The Guardian. He then commenced 2019 by producing and co-writing Jessie Ware’s track ‘Adore You’.
