New Track: The Carnations - 'Way Out On My Own'

If you’re harking after the sound of the sixties, look no further than The Carnations. New demo ‘Way Out On My Own’ sounds like it’s come straight out of the 1963 charts; the production, the harmonies and the guitar riffs couldn’t sound more like an early Beatles track if they tried.

After an influx of sixties psych-influenced bands over the last few years – such as Temples and Tame Impala – this London four-piece are more of your typical, old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, refreshingly creating a more pop than psych feel. With the melodies of Ray Davis via the harmonies of the fab four, The Carnations even manage a sly nod to those infamous Liverpudlians with the lyric : “but it’s time I got myself a ticket to ride”.

Yet the band still manage to put a modern spin on things, especially with the distorted guitar sounds during the chorus, which play fuzzily over the top of the crackling vocals. It feels as if this track needs to be coming out of a turntable’s speakers to do it justice and, with a vintage, analogue vibe to the entire tune, beware of feeling a sudden urge to do the twist.
