New Track: Colour – ‘Strangers’

When a band come together through their authentic passion for making music, there’s always going to be something special about them; this is exactly the case for the Northern newcomers Colour. Named BBC Introducing’s ‘New Band of The Year’ back in 2014, everything seems to moving in the right direction for the band that, in the style of The Proclaimers, travel over 300 miles a week to rehearse. But all of this has proven worthwhile with their latest single ‘Strangers’ boasting the DIY attitude masked by classic guitar pop.

It’s hard not to draw comparison to the contagious sounds of bands like The 1975 but, whilst retaining this sense of excitement and memorability, there’s something slightly more unique about Colour. Whilst jangling guitar riffs harmonise beneath the pacey vocals of lead singer James Tidd, everything manages to sound perfectly polished in a way that still heralds the initial magic of the ‘Strangers’ that was first recorded on to a mobile phone.

Making it almost impossible to believe this is their debut effort, the band have added a much needed dash of colour to a genre that’s slowly becoming a dull pool, and it’s exciting. Coming to the end of their reign as New Band of The Year, it’ll be no surprise to see Colour picking up more titles like these in the very near future.
