New Track: Common Ground – ‘The Rules Of Life’

Formed in Kilwinning Ayrshire in December 2013, Common Ground are a five piece led by charismatic front-man Wullie on vocals and also featuring Sean McKay on lead guitar, Lee Robertson on rhythm guitar, Chris Price (Posh Boy) on bass, with Craig Bryden beating the drums. Since forming, the lads have been making something of a name for themselves supporting acts such as Northside and Mark Morriss as well as headlining King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow. Since hearing and loving the band at Tut’s last June, I have been waiting eagerly on the release of some new material. ‘The Rules Of Life’ precedes the release of Common Ground’s debut E.P and suggests this is a band intent on rising to the top of Glasgow’s music scene at break-neck speed.

‘The Rules Of Life’ is a punchy blend of indie pop-rock with a catchy chorus that hooks the listener almost instantly. As front-man Wullie bellows “the rules of life won’t let you hide away” there is a sneer and rawness in the emotive delivery that nods towards early Gallagher Junior and, when combined with the guitars and drums, has a twist of something fresh about it that may just set Common Ground aside from the rest of the pack. As the track slows, I catch my breath and – with the focus on the bass/drums – realise that this is a stonker of track with a definitive sound that leaves nothing behind. Make no mistake, ‘The Rules of Life’ is high velocity music from the street with intensity and appeal that will thrill and entertain across a wide demographic. This is band on the up, growing in confidence and defining their sound: whatever you’re doing, stop, give this a listen and enjoy!
