New Track: The Hamiltons – ‘Paranoid’

A trumpet solo, a seductive-voiced songstress, jazzy piano – brother-sister duo The Hamiltons make you feel like you’ve unwittingly travelled in time to a 1920s jazz club. While opening with an eerie and distorted accordion, new track ‘Paranoid’ soon flips into a cabaret-esque style show tune, with front-woman Emma Hamilton declaring: “I think I’m being followed”.

Emma’s vocals throughout the track sound disconcertingly triumphant while she states her somewhat unbalanced state of mind, allowing the song to continue with the disturbing thread first displayed by the accordion in the track’s intro. Add to this the sheer retro cool the song oozes, and you have the warped world of The Hamiltons.

Although firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, ‘Paranoid’ also offers a guitar solo (courtesy of virtuoso, Tommy Emmanuel) to bridge the gap between the retro and modern day, as well as thumping drums to give the song a contemporary edge. Yet, despite these little nods to the 21st century, it’s clear that the duo’s hearts firmly belong to that golden age of jazz.

If you’re willing to indulge in the old-school glamour of The Hamiltons, wrap your ears around ‘Paranoid’ without delay.

‘Paranoid’ is out 25 September on Home On The Range Records.
