New Track: The Rising – ‘Free My Soul Tonight’

While the nineties had a certain Gallagher declaring that he was “free to be whatever I / Whatever I choose”, 2015 has The Rising’s Tommy Overington throw society to the wind with a defiant “I’m gonna leave this all behind” in a rousing attack on everything that makes up modern culture, from “the suits that keep lying” to “the tax man keeps calling”.

That’s not to say the band’s latest release is an angry, pessimistic ode to a corrupted world; ‘Free My Soul Tonight’ illustrates a more devil-may-care attitude (no less diminished when paired with a swagger and a vocal performance to rival that of any Oasis tune).

Beginning with a sixties-esque Hammond Organ intro, the track compromises of chugging guitars, a classic guitar solo and some killer pop hooks. The song creates a feeling that the band are sticking their middle fingers up to the establishment, and takes obvious pride in its British musical heritage, with nods to both mod culture and Brit-pop.

The Rising’s sound is overtly retro, producing a song that harks back to those classic pop-rock guitar bands of the sixties, with a Kinks-y sheen to the entire affair. Full of energy, the band have released an excellent track that previews that infamously tricky second album. They’ve made it look easy.

‘Free My Soul Tonight’ is out now on 7″ and download on Detour Records. Get your hands on it here.
