New Track: Weaves – ‘One More’

It does seem like a cliché for a lazy music journalist to label a band as ‘genre defying’ but with such an eclectic back catalogue of tracks, it is clear that Weaves feel no obligation to sit neatly in a specific bracket.

Having no qualms covering the likes of One Direction, the Toronto-based foursome are firm believers that the days of listening to just one style of music are over. Guitarist and co-songwriter Morgan Waters, for instance, professes to live by the mantra “the more you can steal from everywhere, the more interesting your music is going to be”. This is certainly the case for ‘One More’. Awash with frantic surf-rock riffs whilst being vocally reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux, this summery track certainly makes for two and a half minutes that are as ‘interesting’ as they are entertaining.

Punctuated with a FIDLAR-esque burning energy and ringing guitars that intermittently give way to deliberate control, it really wouldn’t feel out of place as a Burger Records release. ‘One More’ really is an excellent offering and can only serve as a further draw for fans at upcoming SXSW Music Festival, and in their support slot for Sunflower Bean’s tour later this spring.

Weaves’ eponymous new album is out 17 June on Memphis Industries.
