Ones To Watch: ELLEKAYE

Picture all the angst you can imagine, gathered together in the form of emotionally driven, punchy tunes; what you’re imagining is ELLEKAYE. A quartet from Brighton and London, a result of university friendships, ELLEKAYE are the band you didn’t know you were missing from your music collection, but you most definitely are.

Their latest track ‘Happy Birthday (It’s Your Birthday)’ perfectly sums up their dark humour and cynicism. According to the band, it’s ‘an anti celebration… The sudden realisation that after 21, everything goes to shit’. Accompanied by a video that sees the band on a German music show, ‘Happy Birthday’ is a fantastic display of the moody vocals and catchy guitar lines that quickly become embedded in your head.

As dark as it may sound, sometimes a bit of doom and gloom is needed from music – ELLEKAYE deliver that, with a side order of humour and the added benefit of actually bloody good tunes. ELLEKAYE are one of those bands that make you want nothing more than to be in a dingy pub, shouting their cynicism right back at them, and I doubt it will be long before a lot of people are doing just that.
