ONES TO WATCH: Holy Esque

If you’re one of the kids who regularly fell down in the playground and scuffed their knees, but held in the tears and got back up – you need to listen to Holy Esque. If your hometown is getting you down, or you’re feeling disconnected from whatever’s going on in your life – you need listen to Holy Esque. This Glaswegian four-piece will ease your pain with their visceral, cathartic sound.

Holy Esque are the epitome of a culture clash; some members of the band met at Glasgow School of Art, whilst others met in their working-class hometown of East Kilbride. With the best of both worlds at their fingertips, the band have articulated the frustrations of everyday life through anthemic guitar riffs and raw, gripping vocals – a stellar example of which can be heard on new single ‘Hexx’.

William Kennedy, who directed the video for ‘Hexx’ has said: “The fragility of the human body is something that has always terrified me ever since I was a child. I wanted the corruption of the physical body to reflect the emotional trauma.” Even without Kennedy’s masterfully shot video, ‘Hexx’ howls with the need to be rid of anxiety. “The hexx is here, the constant fear” – and it can only be relieved by an urgent dispatch of sound.

Holy Esque’s debut album At Hope’s Ravine is released next year via the band’s own label Beyond The Frequency, and they’ll be touring the UK in April & May to promote it. Make sure you keep your eyes and ears fixed on Holy Esque. They’ll soothe those raw knee caps.
