Ones To Watch: October Drift

In extreme cases, there are bands who can cause a stir without actually doing anything. October Drift are one of those bands, and the quartet are showing signs of selling out half of their current UK tour through word of mouth alone. With only small, low-key shows under their belt in 2014, it’s an astonishing thing to see that word of mouth still is one of the most powerful tools, especially as their debut single was only released on February 16th.

‘Whoever’, the debut single, holds a lo-fi sound which is key to the success of this song as a first product. As guitars roar through the track and vocals are interrupted by the feedback and glitches from the stringed-instruments, it’s easy to draw comparisons to the likes of The National and Editors. The single has a mist of gloom hanging over it, but creates more detail in their sound and oozes a more heavy vibe as a whole. It should also be noted that the band have worked with Dan Cox, who has worked with the likes of Thurston Moore and Theme Park, to mix the single.

In this sea of modern music where most bands are struggling to stay afloat, we thought we’d dive in and drown too” the four-piece had to say about the current music scene, displaying a kind of twisted humour that may be accessible in their music too.

October Drift self-released ‘Whoever’ on February 16th via exclusive one-sided vinyl, each coming with its own artwork print. They’ve just begun a sold out tour and will be releasing a second single in the Spring.
